I’ll never forget the exhilarating experience of working at a NASCAR race in Kansas City. But let me clarify – it wasn’t just any ordinary workday. It was a Sunday, and I was there voluntarily, as the overtime wasn’t approved. But money wasn’t my motivation; it was the thrill of being at a live NASCAR event that had always captivated me.
Accompanied by my colleague Dave Fink, a fervent NASCAR enthusiast, we embarked on this adventure together. Dave, usually in sales but a passionate videographer of past races, was equally excited about the opportunity.
One of the perks of covering NASCAR is the unparalleled access it offers compared to other sports. From the pit row to the trackside, I was granted unrestricted access throughout the race. Witnessing tire changes up close and personal, and being within arm's reach of the drivers before the race, was an experience like no other. It made capturing footage and interviews much more accessible and authentic.
However, amidst the adrenaline rush and excitement, there was a constant reminder of the thunderous roar of the engines echoing through the air. It was a symphony of speed and power, albeit one that required ear plugs to withstand. But even with the noise, the atmosphere was electric, and I found myself immersed in the pulsating energy of the race.
As the day unfolded, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and gratitude for being part of such an iconic event. Despite the challenges and exhaustion, that Sunday in Kansas City remains etched in my memory as one of the most memorable events I’ve had the privilege to cover.
Below, you'll find the story that aired on KOAM-TV, accompanied by some of the pictures I captured during the race, each frame a testament to the unforgettable moments I experienced that day.
