Quiet News Days and Bright Celebrations: Covering July 4th in Carl Junction, Missouri

If you've ever worked in TV news, you know the week of July 4th tends to be slow. With many people on vacation, the newsroom often focuses on stories about firework safety, fireworks sales, and how to keep pets calm during the festivities. During my time at KOAM-TV, I covered the annual parade in Carl Junction, Missouri. Daycare kids would adorn their bikes and scooters with decorations. Although the turnout on Main Street was never massive, the kids always had an amazing time.
